Police: Portsmouth man arrested on warrant after collision with fire hydrant

MIDDLETOWN, Rhode Island (WLNE) – A Portsmouth man was arrested after he allegedly led police on a chase through the city Thursday night, according to Middletown police.

Anthony Martin, 48, has been charged with multiple charges related to the chase and resulting collision, as well as existing charges of assault and disorderly conduct.

The incident occurred around 11:35 a.m. on Oct. 10 when Martin was pulled over for a violation on West Main Road with a female passenger.

After the officer obtained the driver’s license and registration, the vehicle fled the stop northbound, driving recklessly and striking a vehicle at the intersection of Woolsey Road.

The vehicle then crashed into another vehicle near a shopping center entrance and then collided with a pickup truck turning onto Browns Lane.

The suspect vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and the driver fled on foot.

Officers arrested Martin after a short foot pursuit and he and the passenger were taken to Newport Hospital for evaluation.

It was discovered that Martin is wanted by the Rhode Island State Police for assault and disorderly conduct.

No injuries were reported from the multiple collisions.
