Man sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting receptionist in Phoenix apartment

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man will spend decades behind bars for sexually assaulting a woman last year as she worked at a downtown Phoenix apartment building.

Maricopa County Prosecutor Rachel Mitchell announced Friday that Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the assault.

According to authorities, the 70-year-old receptionist was working a night shift at an apartment building near Chase Field on December 17, 2023, when Chuchuney asked to be let in.

The victim mistook Chuchuney for a resident and let him in. He then asked the victim for water and when she turned around, he followed her and attempted to sexually assault her before sexually assaulting her, prosecutors said.

Chuchuney then stole her clothing before leaving the residence, authorities said.

“This defendant’s heinous actions and lack of remorse make it clear that he poses a significant danger to the community,” said District Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “Thanks to the work of Assistant District Attorney Maren Soreson, he will now spend decades in prison and face the consequences of his actions.”

In July, Chuchuney pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and two counts of attempted sexual assault.

He was convicted of kidnapping and received a life sentence of supervised probation on the attempted sexual assault charge.
