Woman and child taken to hospital after rollover crash on I-70 near Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A woman and child were taken to a local hospital after the car they were in crashed and rolled over in rainy weather on Interstate 70 on the western edge of Topeka Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 4:25 p.m. Thursday south of Interstate 70 eastbound on SW 10th Avenue. The accident scene was west of the SW Urish Road overpass on I-70.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online accident log, a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander sport utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-70 when it hydroplaned on the wet pavement and went off the right – or south – side of the highway .

The vehicle then struck the guardrail before rolling over and ending up on its side on SW 10th Avenue, which is just south of I-70 at this point.

The driver, Marilyn L. Kowalewski, 22, of Fort Riley, was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected minor injuries, the patrol said.

A passenger, Jaclyn Kowalewski, an infant, also from Fort Riley, was reported uninjured but was also transported to Stormont Vail, the patrol said.

Both occupants of the Mitsubishi were wearing their seatbelts, the patrol said.
