Los Angeles, October 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) One person died and 23 people were rescued after becoming trapped 1,000 feet (305 meters) underground in a gold mine in the US state of Colorado, local authorities said.

The people were part of a tour group and got stuck near the bottom of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado around noon Thursday, Xinhua News Agency reported.

According to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office, the accident was caused by an equipment malfunction.

Around noon, the mine experienced a mechanical problem with the elevator system, posing “a serious danger to participants,” Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell said at a news conference.

Several emergency services, including search and rescue teams, responded to the accident with heavy equipment.

Eleven people were rescued early Thursday and 12 more people were trapped at the bottom of the mine for several hours before being rescued Thursday evening.

Elevator and mine safety experts were on site to check the safety of the elevator before it was used to bring the twelve trapped people to the ground.

Among those rescued were two children and four were evaluated by medical personnel for minor injuries, Mikesell said.

“I am relieved that twelve of the people trapped in the Mollie Kathleen mine have been safely rescued. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the person who died in this incident,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement Thursday evening.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

The mine is a popular tourist destination. The last time an accident occurred was in 1986, and it has been operated as a family-owned tourist attraction for “well over 50 years,” Mikesell said.
