Argentina’s government announced Thursday it would introduce a new “suitability test” for nearly 40,000 civil servants on temporary contracts, saying those who fail the test will be fired from their jobs.

According to a Buenos Aires Times report, the move comes at a time when the Javier Milei government is making massive budget cuts to achieve a zero budget deficit. The exact nature of the test is not yet known.

Manuel Adorni, spokesman for Argentina’s president, said the test was part of a broader process in which public officials would report potential conflicts of interest and undergo a medical examination. With this test, the government wants to set “standards” for civil servants. The test will be mandatory for all state employees whose contracts expire on December 3rd.

Comprehensive economic reforms in Argentina

At a press conference on Thursday, Adorni explained that the exam would be conducted digitally. “It will be a necessary but not sufficient requirement because the extension or non-renewal of a contract will of course be determined by the usual parameters of whether the person deserves the extension,” he added, noting that the review would be carried out in December .

In the initial phase, disabled employees are not included in the assessment due to the lack of system infrastructure. The Argentine government has implemented a number of changes since August, including stricter policies on late arrivals and absences.

The reforms also include a mandatory evaluation of eligibility for transport. Thousands of contracts have been canceled so far. The Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity and the Ministry of Education are the most affected by these comprehensive reforms.

In June, Milei said his government had cut 50,000 jobs and planned further cuts.

Notably, Argentina fell into recession in the first quarter of the year due to drastic spending cuts and is struggling with triple-digit annual inflation of 209 percent. The situation has sparked protests across the country.

Milei was elected president in November last year.
