Colorado mine accident: Police announce one fatality | News

Police confirmed a death following an accident that trapped people in a 1,000-foot-deep gold mine in Colorado on Thursday, October 10.

At least 12 other people had to be rescued after they were trapped for about six hours when a lift at the tourist attraction malfunctioned, emergency services added.

Those trapped were approximately 305 meters underground, but had access to water and the atmosphere was considered good.

The elevator was descending into the Mollie Kathleen gold mine near the town of Cripple Creek when a mechanical problem occurred about 500 feet (150 m) below the surface, posing a “significant danger to participants,” said Jason Mikesell, sheriff in Teller County.
