Child care costs continue to rise sharply in Hawaii

In 2011, the United Nations designated October 11 as International Day of the Girl to draw attention to the challenges of female coming of age. One of the issues some researchers want to address is the rising cost of child care in Hawaii, which some are calling a crisis.

Hannah Gartner is a researcher at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, a Washington, DC-based think tank focused on shaping public policy and improving opportunities for women.

Gartner was in Hawaii this week and stopped by our studio with Aleeka Morgan, executive director of the nonprofit Nurturing Wāhine Fund on Oʻahu. HPR spoke with both about what they see as the child care crisis here in Hawaii.

This interview was broadcast on The conversation on October 10, 2024. “The Conversation” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
