Middle East News: Search for survivors under rubble after Israeli attack on Beirut kills at least 22 | World News

Turkey has joined growing condemnation of Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Israeli attacks against UNIFIL in recent days, amid the Gaza war and cross-border clashes with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, have injured UN staff and sparked international concern.

Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon said Israel recommended moving UNIFIL to northern Lebanon “to avoid danger as fighting intensifies.”

However, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said: “Israel’s attacks on UN forces following its massacres of civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon are a reflection of its perception that its crimes remain unpunished.”

“The international community has an obligation to ensure that Israel complies with international law.”

Meanwhile, UN peacekeeper chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix told the Security Council that the security of more than 10,400 UN peacekeepers in Lebanon was “increasingly at risk”.

He said operations had come to a virtual standstill since late September, coinciding with Israel’s escalation of the conflict with Lebanon.

UNIFIL called attacks on peacekeepers a “serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

Turkey has sharply criticized Israel’s offensives in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

It has suspended all trade with Israel, filed a request to join a genocide case against Israel at the World Court and has repeatedly called for an end to Western support for Israel and international action to end its attacks.
