George Baldock’s fiancée has paid tribute to the tragic death of a footballer in Greece

George Baldock’s heartbroken fiancée has paid tribute following the footballer’s tragic death in Greece.

The former Sheffield United player was found at his home in Athens on Wednesday (October 9) after drowning in his swimming pool.

The British-born Greece international spent seven years with the British side before moving to Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League when his contract expired in the summer.

The 31-year-old was engaged to Annabel Dignam, with whom he shared baby son Brody.

Greek police issued a statement yesterday (October 10) confirming that the footballer’s death was not related to criminal activity.

Ahead of last night’s game between England and Greece, the Football Association (FA) confirmed that there would be a period of silence for Baldock and players would wear black armbands.

And hours after his death was confirmed, Dignam paid tribute on social media with a photo of the loved-up couple smiling together.

“George, the love of my life, my soul mate. The perfect father to our beautiful boy,” she wrote. “You completed me. You were my world and I know we were yours. You are here with me with Brody’s smile, giggle and infectious personality.

“My world will never be the same, but I will find a way for Brody. I promise it. I love you forever and ever G. Your Neen. X.”

Baldock’s family also released a statement describing how the father “brought so much love.”

“You were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person,” they said.

“Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those who were lucky enough to know you and those who adored you in the stands. We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will live on in your beautiful son.

“You were supposed to fly home today so we could celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss. As a family it was incredibly touching, but it was also very difficult to read the large number of tributes written by those who knew George and those whose lives he touched.

“It was impossible not to love him. We ask that you continue to respect our privacy during this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”

Sheffield United said Baldock was “extremely popular with fans, staff and team-mates”, as the Greek national team also said: “There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young , Man. The moment forces his family to express their condolences.
