One dead in RPD officer-involved shooting | Local News

A man has died in an officer-involved shooting late Thursday morning on the Roswell Relief Route.

The Roswell Police Department (RPD) said in a news release late Thursday afternoon that a 41-year-old man was shot after fleeing from officers.

“After being shot, the suspect received first aid from RPD officers but was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter,” the release said. No police officers were injured.

The shooting occurred around 11:40 a.m. after police conducted a traffic stop near South Sunset Avenue and West Brasher Road on a pickup truck pulling a trailer with another vehicle. The driver then fled the scene of the accident in his pickup truck.

According to the release, the suspect was carrying a rifle when he fled on foot at the relief route location.

Police did not release the name of the man who shot. The news release said New Mexico State Police are investigating the shooting.

A Chaves County deputy who responded to the officer-involved shooting was also injured when he drove to the scene and collided with a tractor-trailer in the area of ​​Brasher Road and Southeast Main Street.

“The deputy had to be removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital,” said Undersheriff Charles Yslas.

He added that the deputy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is alert but will remain hospitalized until further notice.

Yslas confirmed that RPD and State Police will investigate the crash.
