The San Francisco 49ers head to Lumen Field for a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in this NFC West showdown. Given that it’s only the sixth game of the season for both teams, based on recent results I can imagine both teams coming into this game with some urgency. After a nice 3-0 start to the season, the Seahawks have suffered two straight losses, including Sunday’s surprising 29-20 loss to the Giants. This week they’re back home trying to right the ship. However, they face a Niners team that will certainly have some alarm bells ringing after last week’s 24-23 home loss to the Cardinals. Since these two teams lost at least as touchdown favorites last week, who can step up and give us Thursday Night Football coverage?

A tough week against the 49ers?

The 49ers are on the road, albeit in a familiar division environment, and face the prospect of falling to 2-4 if they don’t find a way to win this game. Granted, they have some built-in excuses for a slow start to the season. And most teams that saw the Niners’ injuries would be in even worse shape. However, as their health improves, the excuses become less valid as the reigning conference champions really need to start cooking. They won’t be getting Christian McCaffrey back this week, but Jordan Mason has been a good replacement. Additionally, the health of the ailing Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are likely to have improved and one could make a case for why the timing could be good this week as the urgency is certainly high and overall health is better.

Focusing solely on San Francisco’s predicament this week could obscure the issues the Seahawks have on the table this week. After starting 3-0, falling behind to 3-3 would be a bitter pill to swallow. A score of 4:2 sounds much better. This is a time where Seattle needs to start piling up wins. This is game two of five games in which they score four goals at home. If they start 0-2 and fall to .500, they will fall behind 8-ball with some heavily reloaded away games on the schedule. The loss to Detroit and especially at home to the Giants last week looked bad, but they were still in those games, with some costly mistakes along the way being the deciding factors.
