The Northern Lights are on display throughout the region

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is likely to arrive on Earth overnight Thursday into Friday, resulting in increased geomagnetic activity and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights in the Miami Valley.

Due to the potential for this activity, a Geomagnetic Storm Warning has been issued for October 10th and 11th. Watches at this level are rarely issued, Dunn said.

This would be the sixth time the Northern Lights would be visible in the region this year.

The reason for this is that we are currently in what is known as a “solar maximum,” where activity on the Sun reaches a point every 11 years where sunspots become more numerous and solar flares occur more frequently.

The best viewing takes place late Thursday after 11:00 p.m. until around 2:00 a.m. on Friday.

To have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights, move away from the city lights and look towards the northern horizon. Use your camera’s long exposure or night mode to capture the best photos.

The Northern Lights can be visible as far away as Alabama and Northern California.

Aside from the Northern Lights, this geomagnetic storm could also have damaging effects on some key infrastructure and technologies, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.
