Garbutt: Woman has arm bitten off in horror dog attack in Townsville, Queensland

A woman has had her arm bitten off in a horrific dog attack in Queensland.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was attacked at a home on Lonerganne Street in the Townsville suburb of Garbutt just after 7am on Friday.

Paramedics discovered the woman had a severed forearm and her injuries were described as potentially life-threatening.

Police officers had to shoot the dog to save her.

The woman’s arm was recovered and it was hoped surgeons could reattach it.

A neighbor who described the dog as a “pit bull mix” said it attacked its owner after another neighbor arrived at her home.

“The dog was angry at the neighbor and she put her arm out to bring him back and he got her arm,” she told the Courier Mail.

“Your arm is gone below the elbow.”

Resident Corey Geesu said he was attacked by the same dog two weeks ago and spent several nights in the hospital as a result.

Mr Geesu was left with several large scars on his right forearm and felt the dangerous dog should have been taken away sooner.

He said it was lucky the dog didn’t attack any children.

Queensland Police District duty officer Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said a tourniquet wrapped around the woman’s arm “may have saved her life”.

“It was a very serious, very catastrophic injury,” he said.

The sergeant added that police had “no choice” but to euthanize the pit bull.

“I’ve been a police officer for 37 years, this is the first time I’ve seen something this serious,” he said.

The attack in Townsville came a day after a woman was attacked by three dogs – two American bulldogs and a pit bull – at her home in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s far east.

Police tried to stop the attack by spraying the animals with capsicum spray, but the dogs continued to abuse the woman, who was about 20 years old, and had to be shot.

Emergency crews were called to the home on Ross Street just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

Paramedics took the woman to hospital in critical condition.

A neighbor who lives on the same street said there were a total of five dogs on the government housing property.

“I was just walking home and there was a lot of shouting and screaming,” the neighbor told Daily Mail Australia.

“Then the police came and you could just hear shots.” “I saw the lady being taken into the ambulance and she was very unwell.”

He claimed the remaining dogs on the property were aggressive, adding that he felt nervous walking his own dog past the house.

Police have launched an investigation into the attack.
