Pre-show celebrations allowed pilots to engage with the community before the Thunder Over the Heartland Air Show

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Thunderbirds are in Topeka for the Thunder Over the Heartland Air Show, but before the main event, the artists reached out to the local community.

The day started with an inclusive air show. Thanks to Endeavor Private Wealth, who sponsored this event, children and adults with disabilities had the unique opportunity to watch the rehearsal up close.

Chris McGee is a managing partner and as the father of a son with special needs, he and his wife Emily McGee were inspired to host an event that would accommodate those sensitive to noise and crowds.

“We completely understand the importance of adaptability and inclusivity and having ways to make it a little easier for us to take our children and experience things together as a family,” said Emily McGee.

The relaxed atmosphere allowed individuals and families to enjoy time together without stress or judgment.

Colby Myer was one of the participants and having been interested in air shows and airplanes since he was a child, he knows he will appreciate this.

“The best part so far is that I got to meet one of the T-Birds and also watch them fly so high,” Myers said.

The fun didn’t stop there.

Evergy Plaza hosted a launch party and flyover, allowing the public to meet the aerial artists.

This week was a homecoming for Junction City native and Thunderbird member Ashley Nicole Taylor.

“I know I’ve been to different parts of the country and around the world, but I love Kansas,” Taylor said. “I try to tell all my teammates that the great thing about being from the Midwest is how friendly and welcoming everyone here is.”

She adds that in addition to providing entertainment, it is also important for them to connect with the communities they visit.

“I feel like we work for everyone else, just like we’re here to care for the communities, and we like coming to these places just because we enjoy it, it’s unique and we like different parts of the country can see,” Taylor explains.

Gates officially open at noon on October 11th at Forbes Field, with shows running through October 13th.
