A Memphis man is raising funds for Hurricane Milton victims

MEMPHIS, Texas (KFDA) – Amid a tragic week in Memphis, the community is coming together to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Milton.

The city of Memphis was rocked after Police Chief Rex Plant was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant a week ago.

“I announced what I was doing and immediately received monetary donations and donations from various organizations in the city. Unbelievable, unbelievable what people were immediately willing to give to this process,” said Memphis resident Andrew Lee.

Lee is a member of First United Methodist Church, which works with the Lion’s Club and other organizations in Memphis to raise funds.

“We accepted a special offer last Sunday and had ideas about where to send it, but this turned out to be a more tangible way to respond. That’s what we’re going to do, we’re going to give him our little part and add to his already growing donations,” said Stan Cosby, pastor of First Methodist Church of Memphis.

Lee wants people to know that Memphis is a resilient community and that it is more than what the last week has shown.

“I think the biggest thing I can take away from this is that Memphis as a community and what happened in the last week doesn’t necessarily define what we are as a community and who we are as a community,” Lee said.

Donations can be made until Sunday morning, when Lee will fly to Florida to deliver the donations in person.

The First Methodist Church and several businesses in Memphis will continue to accept donations.

Lee will also be in contact with the church to continue sending items after he arrives in Florida.
