Colorado mine updates: One dead and 12 trapped as rescue operation continues at Mollie Kathleen gold mine

One person is reportedly dead and 12 people remain trapped at a former gold mine in Colorado, where an equipment malfunction left a group of visitors stranded Thursday, officials said.

Another 11 people were rescued 500 feet below the surface of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office said.

“I have spoken with the Teller County Sheriff and county commissioners and will remain in touch as this rescue operation progresses,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said wrote Thursday in a statement on

“This was due to an equipment malfunction,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook. “The mine didn’t collapse.”

The 1,000-foot-long mine is promoted as a tourist attraction to learn more about mining in the “Old West.”
