49ers news: Evan Anderson and Jaylen Mahoney called up from practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers announced two transactions ahead of Thursday night’s game against their rival Seattle Seahawks.

Defensive tackle Evan Anderson was called up from the practice squad. Jordan Elliott was ruled out. That left Maliek Collins, Kalia Davis and Kevin Givens as the only active center backs. So the 49ers need a big body, and Anderson more than fills that need. Unlike last week, TY McGill will not be in limited action. The Niners are likely expecting a pass-heavy approach from an offense with the lowest run rate in the NFL.

Safety Jaylen Mahoney was the other player cut from the practice squad. Talanoa Hufanga is placed on injured reserve after tearing wrist ligaments, so the Niners could use help on special teams. Malik Mustapha will take over as Hufanga’s full-time starter. He played a lot of special teams. So Mahoney figures out how to take some of that special teamwork away from Mustapha.
