According to the United Nations, Israeli forces have fired on peacekeeping positions in Lebanon

HISTORY: :: Northern Israel

A U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon said Israeli forces fired on its positions on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon – UNIFIL – two of its peacekeepers were injured when an Israeli tank fired on their headquarters in Naqoura.

Israel is pursuing an increasingly extensive offensive against Hezbollah in this area.

A UN source said there were no injuries in two other incidents.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti:

“This is extremely worrying, not only because the peacekeepers are there, but also because this was most likely done through a deliberate attack on our troops, which is a violation or a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

Italy has protested to Israel over the incident.

His defense minister called it illegal and a possible war crime.

“We asked the reason why these shots were fired and expected to know them officially. The ambassador was unable to give us any explanations.”

:: Karak, Lebanon

Israel has warned Lebanese civilians not to return to their homes in the south as it continues its attack.

On Thursday evening, Israeli attacks on central Beirut killed several people and injured dozens more, the Lebanese Health Ministry said.

A security source said at least one senior Hezbollah official was targeted in the attacks.
