One person died in a shooting involving Castle Rock police Wednesday evening

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — One person died in a shooting involving Castle Rock police Wednesday night, the department confirmed to Denver7 Thursday morning.

According to Castle Rock police, no officers were injured, but an adult suspect was killed.

The incident began around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Castle Rock police said, near the intersection of Bilberry Street and Celestial Avenue. It was reported to police that a man warmed with a stick grabbed the caller’s phone and broke it. He then left the scene, possibly armed with a shotgun, the caller said.

When Castle Rock police arrived at the scene, officers said they saw a man with a shotgun in his hand. He allegedly broke into a rental office for an apartment complex and barricaded himself inside the building. According to Castle Rock police, officers heard at least one gunshot from inside.

The man with the gun then left the building and shot at the officers. Castle Rock police fired back, hitting the man. They immediately attempted to provide the man with medical aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave while Castle Rock police review the shooting in accordance with department policy and the District Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Response Team will also investigate.

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the man who was shot.
