A suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with a stabbing at a San Marcos-area high school.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said it received a call from a person claiming to have been stabbed at Mission Hills High School. Officers found the victim on campus.

He was taken to the nurse’s office and then to a local hospital for treatment. The department said he suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

School officials received information about a possible suspect in the stabbing and arrested him at his home a short time later.

Both the victim and suspect were students at the school, the sheriff’s department said.

The high school was placed on lockdown just before 3:40 p.m., and authorities lifted the order a few minutes later after the suspect’s arrest.

“The safety of our school children is a priority for the Sheriff’s Office,” the department said in a statement. “We take all threats seriously.”

The department added that students who hear of threats or potential violence can contact school resource officers at any time or call the anonymous Students Speaking Out hotline at (888) 580-8477.

The investigation is ongoing.
