Volney, N.Y. — The driver of an SUV who collided with Oswego County Deputy Cailee Campbell’s patrol car, killing him, will not be ticketed or identified, the department spokesman said Thursday.

Campbell, 33, of Central Square, was killed in the crash at the intersection of Rowlee Road and Route 176 in Volney while responding to a motor vehicle accident on Sept. 25 around 6:45 p.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, Campbell was driving east on Rowlee Road in her 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor with her lights and sirens on. A man driving a 2023 Toyota Highlander was traveling south on 176 when he struck Campbell’s patrol car crossing the intersection.

Equipment in the car shows Campbell slowed as she approached the intersection, Bucher previously said.

The man will not be ticketed or identified for the accident, Lt. Andrew Bucher, a spokesman for the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday.

“I am not revealing his name to protect him; “This was simply a terrible accident,” Bucher said in an email.

Sheriff Don Hilton said the crash was “simply an accident.”

The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries following the accident. He has since been released, said Bucher.

Campbell was taken to Oswego Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Hundreds attended her funeral, including law enforcement officers from across the state.
