Green Bay area chiropractor pleads not guilty to charges of sexually assaulting patient

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — The attorney for Ray Roddan, a chiropractor accused of inappropriately touching patients, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf Thursday.

Roddan, 76, faces three counts of fourth-degree sexual assault stemming from incidents in 2021 involving various patients.

Roddan did not appear in court Thursday because he is hospitalized with an illness, his lawyer Nicole Morley said. He returns to court on November 12th.

Assistant District Attorney Claire Lamal requested that Roddan not be allowed to practice law as a condition of the bond. Morley rejected the request. Commissioner Chad Resar denied the request, saying Roddan was presumed innocent and needed an opportunity to earn a living.

Morley also objected to the criminal complaint, pointing out that while there were only three charges, the information included details of other potential victims whose situations were not charged. She called for the “surplus” to be eliminated.

“These baseless allegations are, in my opinion, inadmissible character evidence,” Morley said.

Lamal defended the information, saying there is strength in numbers when it comes to explaining allegations that happen behind closed doors. It also alerts the defense that there may be evidence of other acts in the case.

Commissioner Resar agreed that there are allegations that fall outside the statute of limitations, but a decision on admissibility will be made later. He denied the request to strike the information from the case.

According to the criminal complaint, the victims described how Roddan touched them sexually during treatment.

Roddan told investigators he tried to get patients to consent to certain contact before an exam, but that system was “not foolproof,” the complaint says.

“Dr. Roddan explained: “I never do anything intentionally, is it perhaps unintentional?” Investigator Lovato asked Dr. Roddan to give an example of an unintentional act. Dr. Roddan stated, “‘I don’t pet,’” the complaint states.
