How surprising was Robert Saleh’s release by the New York Jets?

On Tuesday morning we witnessed a stunning piece of breaking news as New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh was fired midway through the season. I like the move and it was the right one, but the timing shocked me and everyone. The Jets are a disaster internally with all these stories of complete dysfunction coming out, and I’m sure more stories will come out here soon. Below is my brief opinion on it, as seen in The Times Union:

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson made absolutely the right decision by firing head coach Robert Saleh. Johnson should have fired Saleh after he went 7-10 last season. Saleh may be a good defensive coordinator, but he never impressed me as a head coach and Johnson fired him after five games and we’ll see if it makes a difference. The Jets shouldn’t be 2-3 with the roster they have this season, and that’s why they’re making a change. I don’t believe Johnson consulted quarterback Aaron Rodger before firing Saleh, and that’s how it should be. Rodger’s needs to play better and despite all the turmoil, a win Monday night over the Bills and the Jets would clinched first place in the AFC East.

The interim coach is Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets’ defensive coordinator. Next up for the Jets is the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. If the Jets win, they will move into first place in the AFC East at 3-3 overall.
