DC threatens criminal action against officials for negligence in NH-169A construction accidents | Mangaluru News

Udupi: Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K warned against this Criminal cases A lawsuit will be filed against the contractors and officials responsible for the negligence that led to several accidents at the construction site Indrali railway bridge (ROB) Construction site on National highway 169A. At a meeting at the DC office on Thursday, she expressed deep concern over the delays in the project, which have led to severe traffic congestion and numerous accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries in the last two years. “In this situation, criminal proceedings must be initiated against the responsible contractors, railway officials and engineers of the National Highways Authority will be initiated,” DC said.
The statistics are alarming. In 2023, eight accidents occurred with one fatality and seven seriously injured people. In 2024, 10 accidents have already been registered, in which two people died and 10 people were seriously to slightly injured. Delays and negligence of both railway and highway departments were identified as the main reasons for these incidents. The DC added that it would write to the Central Ministry demanding action against the parties involved.
The construction of the Indrali ROB, which began in 2018-19, was marked by poor coordination and slow progress. Frustrated with the slow pace, the DC issued a directive that the work must be completed by November 10.
She also stressed the need for simultaneous execution of iron welding and girder work, as well as inspection and installation of bearings on the railway tracks. The necessary authorization to suspend train services during these installations must be obtained immediately.
SP Arun K said that there were public protests against the project. He pointed out that officers’ inefficiency was directly responsible for the accidents and deaths. “If these accidents had affected your own families, would you have accepted these delays?” he asked, condemning the constant excuses at previous meetings. He warned that contractors, engineers and railway officials found guilty in recent accidents will be arrested and brought to justice.
