Ways to Cope with Political Stress During Election Season

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – Election Day is just around the corner and it can bring with it a lot of anxiety and stress.

Dr. Luis Fong, mental health director at Denova Collaborative Health, said it’s important for people to pay attention to their mental health on this final trip to the voting booth. He said he has seen an increase in cases of politically-related fear.

“I think there is a lot of political uncertainty,” he said. “No matter what party, there is a lot of stress and a lot of concern about which direction we are going.”

This political stress could lead to poor decisions.

“Sometimes that fear can manifest itself as fear and result in violence,” Dr. Fong. “We want to be heard and we want our thoughts to be expressed, but we are unable to do so, and sometimes we are unable to express ourselves clearly, calmly and collectively.”

If you’re feeling more irritable, short-tempered or worried, Fong says it may be time to limit your exposure to politics.

“Let’s say about 10 minutes at the start and end of the day, that way you’re still on track and not getting overly satiated and overwhelmed,” he said.

Also, take time for yourself.

“Whether it’s meditation, exercise, or spending time with loved ones; Doing things we enjoy,” said Dr. Fong.

He added that it’s okay to set boundaries when talking about politics with others.

“Sometimes it’s OK to apologize before a political argument and say, ‘Hey, I really don’t want to talk about that right now,'” Fong said.

If you notice that a loved one is struggling with a lot of stress, approach them with a lot of empathy. Ultimately, Fong said there should be no shame in seeking professional help.
