Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sedgwick County 911 dispatch received a 911 call from Florence reporting that she had shot her son, according to Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses.

Police, Sedgwick County EMS personnel and the Wichita Fire Department responded to the scene.

First responders found a 16-year-old boy in an apartment with a single gunshot wound. EMS transported him to an area hospital where he was in extremely critical condition.

Officers arrested 46-year-old Florence of Wichita, the victim’s mother. While investigating this case, investigators learned of a previously unreported incident in March 2024 in which Florence threatened an ex-husband and his current girlfriend with a gun.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Florence was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault, domestic violence and aggravated assault

Investigators continue to gather information and the facts will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration.
