Driver injured in Holt County crash on Interstate 29 near mile marker 77

On October 9, 2024, at approximately 10:40 p.m., a two-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 29 at the 77 mile marker in Holt County, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident involved a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am and a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia, both traveling north.

The accident occurred when the Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Brandon N. Fernandez, 23, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, slowed. The Freightliner Cascadia, driven by Sophony Similus, 37, of Orlando, Florida, struck the rear of the Grand Am. The impact caused the Pontiac to rest in a west-facing ditch while the Freightliner stopped on the side of the road.

The Pontiac was totaled and was towed from the scene by Double D Towing, while the Freightliner sustained minor damage and was driven away. Fernandez, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mosaic Hospital by Atchison/Holt EMS. Similus was not injured in the accident and remained at the scene.

Assisting were Trooper JD Schmedding, the Holt County Sheriff’s Office and Atchison/Holt EMS.
