Super polling stations proposed for Guernsey general election

People voting in Guernsey’s 2025 general election could be able to vote at any polling station on the island if a proposal is passed.

The State Assembly and Constitution Committee has called for polling places to become “super polling places,” allowing Islanders to vote at the polling place of their choice, regardless of the community in which they live.

The committee said two super polling stations recorded the highest voter turnout in the 2020 election, while smaller polling stations recorded “relatively few voters.”

It called for the establishment of eight super polling stations across the island, three of which would be open on the proposed primary days and all on election day.

Committee deputy chair Carl Meerveld said there had been consultation with communities to ensure all views were heard.

“The committee believes it is important for the community to be able to vote at any polling station as this reflects our island-wide electoral system and ensures that no one can show up at the wrong place,” he said.

“Having considered attendance during the 2020 election and taking into account feedback from communities, the committee is confident that its proposals for 2025 will ensure the electorate has a wide choice when choosing where to cast their vote.”

The super polling stations would be at the Dave Ferguson Hall in Beau Sejour, the Les Maingys Activity Centre, the Styx Community Centre, the Castel Douzaine Room, St Martin’s Parish Hall, St Sampson’s Community Hall, the St Peter Port Constables’ Office and the St Andrew’s Douzaine Room is located.
