Professional climber Michael Gardner dies in Nepal at the age of 32

An experienced mountaineer has died in a tragic incident.

Michael Radner— a professional mountaineer who climbed the Isis Face of Denali as well as the Cassin Ridge in Alaska and the east face of Mt. Hunter — died Oct. 7 in a fall while climbing Mount Jannu East in Nepal with his longtime climbing partner Sam Hennesseysaid Arc’teryx, a climbing equipment brand that sponsored him.

The details of his death – which occurred on his third attempt to descend the north face of the 24,500-foot mountain – have yet to be announced, but the company said on social media that Sam “has been reported safe.”

“We knew Mike as everyone’s favorite person. He was curious and loving,” Arc’teryx shared in an October 8 Instagram post. “He had a smile and a way about him that drew you in. He loved sharing knowledge and really engaging in human interaction.”

The message described the 32-year-old as a “skateboarder, skier, climber, avid skier, writer and mountain guide” and continued: “He refused to be pigeonholed by any label and pursued everything that fascinated him.”
