Russia claims to have shot down over 90 Ukrainian drones following reports of an attack on an air base

Russian forces shot down 92 Ukrainian drones overnight on October 10, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed, amid increasing reports of successful attacks on Russian military targets.

The bulk of the drones – 47 – were reportedly intercepted over the Krasnodar region in southwestern Russia, where Ukraine reportedly attacked a base with 400 Shahed drones just a day earlier.

Krasnodar Territory Governor Veniamin Kondratiev did not report the attacks against his region on October 10 at the time of publication.

At the same time, local authorities in the Russian Republic of Adygea, an enclave in the Krasnodar Region, reported a drone attack “by (Ukrainian) drones on the suburb of (the capital) Maykop.”

According to reports, residents of the village of Rodnikovoye are being evacuated. There were no injuries and a resulting fire would be extinguished, Governor Murat Kumpilov claimed.

The governor’s statement comes shortly after the Russian Telegram channel Astra wrote that in the early hours of October 10, drones attacked the Khanskaya military airfield in the Russian Republic of Adygea.

The airfield is located near the village of Khanskaya, close to the region’s capital, Maykop, and about 270 kilometers east of occupied Crimea. Khanskaya airfield is home to Russia’s 272nd Training Aviation Regiment.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention drones intercepted over the Republic of Adygeya.

Instead, according to the Defense Ministry, twelve more drones were shot down over Kursk Oblast, nine over Rostov Oblast, four over Bryansk Oblast, two over Belgorod Oblast and one over Voronezh Oblast.

All of the above regions lie on Russia’s border with Ukraine and are often the target of cross-border attacks.

Fifteen more drones were reportedly shot down over the Sea of Azov and two over Russian-occupied Crimea.

The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify the claims.

Ukraine has carried out a series of attacks against air bases and other military facilities in an attempt to weaken Russia’s stronger air force and curb Moscow’s ability to launch devastating airstrikes on Ukrainian cities.

A Ukrainian drone strike set fire to a Russian weapons depot containing North Korean ammunition in Bryansk Oblast, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on October 9.
