Two people were killed and four injured in traffic accidents at night

Two people were killed and four injured in two traffic accidents in less than 12 hours on Greece’s roads, underscoring concerns about a rise in road deaths.

The first incident occurred on Wednesday evening on the Thessaloniki-Kavala highway in northern Greece, near the village of Nea Apollonia.

According to state broadcaster ERT, a car left the road for an unknown reason and crashed into a tree. The impact killed a 31-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car and injured the driver and another passenger, ages 24 and 28, respectively. The two young men are being treated for multiple injuries.

The second fatal incident involved a two-car collision on the Greek capital’s notorious Poseidonos Avenue in the early hours of Thursday.

The cars were traveling in the same direction, from the port city of Piraeus to the coastal suburb of Glyfada, when they collided and went off the road. One of the vehicles crashed into a light pole, killing the driver from the force of the impact. The other hit some parked cars and a tree, injuring its driver and passenger and requiring them to be hospitalized.

According to the Greek statistics agency ELSTAT, 82 people died on Greece’s roads and 53 suffered serious injuries in July alone, compared to 78 fatalities and 89 seriously injured in the same month last year.
