Sanford police believe the stabbing that occurred Sunday at Midtown Mall may have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the two people involved.

Police are still searching for people who may have witnessed the incident and have identified a man who may be connected to the incident, the agency said Wednesday afternoon. Public information officer Mark Dyer did not respond to emailed questions about the man’s suspected connection to the stabbing.

The department shared a photo on Facebook of a man wearing jeans, a dark shirt and a hat, but did not provide any identifying information.

“He may have an eye injury and could provide important information to help us better understand what happened,” Dyer said in a statement.

Dyer said the department’s criminal investigations unit has reviewed footage of the stabbing, but the reason for the fight or any specific incidents that may have led to it are unclear.

Earlier this week, police said the suspect may have stolen a backpack, but clarified Wednesday that “there is no evidence” that it was a theft.

The police are also looking for other witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kyle Cutler at 207-324-3644, option 1.
