The former Republican senator from Anchorage is listed as a Democrat in the election pamphlet as the state plans a correction

Former Anchorage Republican Sen. Mia Costello was listed as a registered Democrat in a section of the state’s official election pamphlet, prompting state election officials to send a letter to Anchorage residents to correct the error.

In a prepared statement, the lieutenant governor’s office noted that Costello’s political affiliation was correctly listed in her candidate profile. The incorrect affiliation was listed in a list of candidates. The lieutenant governor’s office said the error was “a clerical error.”

“This error occurred during the data entry process and was not detected prior to printing,” the office said.

The online version of Anchorage’s official election brochure has since been corrected. A mailing will be sent out immediately, the lieutenant governor’s office said, apologizing for any confusion.

Costello is one of three people — including Democrat Denny Wells and perennial candidate Dustin Darden — running in the open race to represent Anchorage’s House District 15.

Costello said she spoke by phone with Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom, the top elected official in charge of running state elections, after the error was revealed. Costello said she understands that “mistakes are made.”

“We are all human and she is sending out a correction. So I’ll keep going. End of story,” she said.
