BC man gets 10 years in prison for killing relative and stabbing two others

A Surrey, British Columbia, man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for involuntary manslaughter following a triple stabbing at a Newton townhouse complex that left a female family member dead and a 2-year-old child and another man seriously injured .

Harpreet Singh was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in New Westminster for one count of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault in 2020. He was also given a 10-year firearms ban.

Taking into account time served, Singh will spend four years in prison.

The deceased woman has been identified as Baljit Kaur. The toddler and another adult, Jagjit Singh, were seriously injured but survived.

According to police, the three victims were stabbed in one of the townhouse units shortly before 9 p.m. PT after a verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said at the time that the suspect and victims were immediate family members who all lived together in the Newton home.

An RCMP spokesman said Singh fled the scene of the stabbing but was quickly arrested nearby.

“This began as a verbal altercation between family members that ultimately ended in the tragic loss of a human life,” IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang wrote in a statement in October 2020.

“Incidents like this involving children are particularly emotionally distressing and we will continue to support those affected by this tragedy.”
