Young Cubans die in an accident and the family seeks support for the funerals.

Two young Cubans named Reysis Hernández and Mel Viera died in a serious traffic accident in Lehigh, Florida, on October 6, and the family is asking for help with the funeral.

The victims’ families, originally from the Cuban community of Bejucal, launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to cover funeral costs, seeking support from friends, acquaintances and other Cubans living in the United States.

Ellimay Hernández, the campaign organizer, said on the GoFundMe page: “I am raising funds for the funeral of two dearly loved young people who tragically lost their lives in a car accident. The parents are going through sad and desperate times. In addition to the very high funeral costs, any amount will be a great help and the family will be very grateful.

The accident occurred as the teens were traveling west in a sedan on Lee Boulevard east of Lee Street.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Cape Coral, lost control of the vehicle on a curve, jumped the road barrier and entered the eastbound lane, where he collided head-on with another car. A third vehicle was also involved in the collision.

The driver of the limousine and three of his passengers, including Reysis Hernández and Mel Viera, died at the scene.

A passenger in the second car was seriously injured and taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Other people involved in the accident also suffered serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.

The Bejucal community and friends of the families have shown their solidarity with the family and the fundraiser is almost complete with its goal of $11,000.

The fundraiser can be found on GoFundMe under the name Ellimay Hernández.
