A Burnet County church security officer fired a gun three times into a pond

CBS Austin learned new details Wednesday about last weekend’s shooting at a Burnet County church and the false narrative surrounding it.

According to court documents, Jacob Wayne Tarver, 45, a security member at Epicenter Church, says he fired his gun three times toward a pond around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, which he said was previously used to scare off two suspicious men, one of whom he said was had a gun.

Tarver admitted to making up the story about the men to whitewash the incident, admitted he had recklessly shot at the pond, and apologized for not telling the truth.

He was arrested Monday and charged with deadly conduct, tampering with evidence and making false reports to initiate an emergency response.

Tarver is currently being held in the Burnet County Jail.
