The Oregon Department of Justice has asked to investigate the Milwaukie police shooting

The Oregon Department of Justice will take over the shooting of two Milwaukie police officers who seriously injured an unarmed man last month.

To September 30, Officers Sgt. Eduardo Sanchez and Officer Kwasean Akom – shot and killed Hunter Newton21, who remains in critical condition.

“To date, the investigation into the incident has been led by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation and consultation with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office,” Clackamas County District Attorney John Wentworth wrote to the DOJ on Monday.

“With this letter, I am formally requesting that the Criminal Justice Division of the Oregon Department of Justice undertake the formal review of the officers’ use of force.”

Wentworth declined to provide further details about why he asked the state agency to step in and take over the investigation into the shooting.

Newton was pulled over at 12:55 a.m. on Sept. 30 and found to be driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor.

According to video of the incident, Newton was shot in his car in the parking lot of a Taco Bell. According to police, officers asked him to get out of his vehicle, but Newton refused. Newton was not armed.

The officers carried body camera footage that was turned over to the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team.

Lawyers for Newton’s family did not respond to a request for comment.
