A 20-year-old woman could face charges after suffering a miscarriage in a New York restaurant bathroom: police

A 20-year-old woman could face criminal charges after she apparently miscarried at a Manhattan restaurant last week, leaving the fetus behind and clogging the toilet, officials said this week.

The male child, believed to be 22 to 23 weeks pregnant and weighing just over a pound, was found just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 30 in the restroom of Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine on Fulton Street near Gold Street in the Discovered downtown, the police said.

“At the moment it is [medical examiner’s office] “says it’s possible the fetus took one or two breaths, but not enough to stay alive,” NYPD Chief Joseph Kenny told reporters on Tuesday.

Investigators believe the woman, who was a customer at the restaurant the day before, went to the bathroom, where she likely suffered a miscarriage, Kenny said.

“She leaves the restroom and employees are made aware that the restroom is dirty,” the boss said. “The next day they come in and find it’s clogged.”

According to the police officer, workers soon found the fetus in the toilet with the placenta and umbilical cord still attached.

There was “nothing unusual” about the child, Kenny said.

The NYPD is currently discussing next steps with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

“Most likely it would lead to this [the mom’s] “Arrest for Concealment of a Human Corpse, which is an E felony,” Kenny said.
