The NFL star from New Jersey is charged with serious crimes

A New Jersey New England Patriots player who was arrested this weekend on multiple charges will not be playing football any time soon.

The league placed Jabrill Peppers on the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday after he was charged with two felonies related to an incident at his home in Braintree, Massachusetts. According to MassLive, police were called early Saturday morning and a woman said that a man who lived in the apartment, identified as Peppers, hit her, choked her and took her clothes off before taking her outside. She also told police that she had been choked six times.

The report also states that Peppers allegedly placed his hand on her neck, slammed her head against the wall and pushed her down the stairs. Officers who responded to the call wrote that the woman had noticeable injuries. Peppers appeared at his arraignment Monday and pleaded not guilty. He was later released on $2,500 bail and ordered to have no contact with the woman.

Peppers was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation or suffocation, assault of a family or household member and possession of a Class B drug, with cocaine allegedly found during the investigation.

Peppers played high school football at Don Bosco Prep and Paramus Catholic High School before playing college at Michigan. The Cleveland Browns selected him 25th overall in the 2017 draft and he spent two seasons there before returning to New Jersey to play three seasons with the Giants. Peppers signed with the Patriots in 2022 and agreed to a three-year extension in July.

Peppers’ placement on the exempt list means he cannot attend practices, games or travel with the team while the matter is ongoing, but he will still be paid.
