TOPEKA – With the general election less than a month away and the deadline to register to vote less than a week away, here are some steps to developing a voting plan.

Register to vote

Kansas residents have until Tuesday, October 15th to register to vote. Voter registration closes 21 days before Election Day.

Kansans can Register online with the Foreign Minister and the Ministry of Finance, Email us your registration in English or Spanish to the local county elections office – as long as it is postmarked by October 15th – or register in person at the local county elections office.

If Kansas is already registered, it can check its voter registration status at Foreign Minister website.

If a voter is currently 17 years old but will be 18 before General Election Day, Nov. 5, they can register.

Anyone living in Kansas can register to vote in Kansas, regardless of how long they have lived in the state. Kansas residents convicted of a federal or state felony are not allowed to vote and should not register.

Postal voting, absentee voting and early voting

Applications for postal voting should be postmarked and mailed to county election officials by November 5, Election Day. Voters must sign the outside of the envelope so election officials can verify their signature. The deadline for submitting an early voting application by mail is October 29th. Mail-in ballots can be tracked on the Foreign Minister website.

All Kansas voters who live out of state should request an absentee ballot. Ballots will be mailed to voters on October 16th. You should return the completed ballot by mail to your county’s election officials.

In-person early voting begins October 16 in select counties. All counties must offer early in-person voting no later than Oct. 29, one week before Election Day.

Voters should contact their county’s elections director for details about where and when their county will offer in-person early voting. The Secretary of State’s Office will release a list of all counties offering in-person early voting shortly before October 16th.

Photo ID is required for each in-person vote. Early voting ends November 4th at 12:00 p.m.

Voting on election day

Voters must vote at the polling location listed with their address on their registration. Voters can check their polling locations via the Foreign Minister’s website.

Upon arrival, voters will be expected to show photo ID. They can bring a driver’s license – which can be issued by another state as long as voters are registered in Kansas – a U.S. passport, a military ID card, a Native American ID card, a government ID card and a student ID card from a post-secondary institution in Kansas, a concealed one Carry license – again issued by each state as long as voters are registered in Kansas – or a welfare card.

Rights of voters

The polling stations must be open from 6 a.m. and may be closed until 8 p.m. All polling stations must be open for at least 12 consecutive hours. If a voter is in line before the polling station closes and there is a queue, all voters in line when the polling station closes are eligible to vote.

Every polling place must be accessible to all voters with disabilities. Finney, Ford, Grant, Haskell and Seward counties are all required to provide alternative language assistance.

The ACLU of Kansas will provide a statewide, nonpartisan election protection hotline. If a voter believes their voting rights have been violated, they can call the ACLU hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE.
