Charlottesville Vice Mayor Brian Pinkston discusses the tragic accident and the city’s plans at the council meeting

Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – On Cville Right Now Live, Vice Mayor Brian Pinkston addressed key topics from the recent Charlottesville City Council meeting. The focus of the discussion was the emotional public reaction to a tragic fatal accident on Elliott Avenue that killed several people Mamawa Simai. “The room was full of people who were really hurt and upset and angry and frustrated about this unnecessary death,” Pinkston said, reflecting on the community’s compassion and frustration over the lack of pedestrian infrastructure.

Pinkston explained the city’s plan to invest in better pedestrian safety measures and emphasized the need for more targeted and disciplined measures. He noted, “We have a lot of work to do… I think you’re going to see some more short-term, like immediate responses to this particular intersection.”

In addition, Pinkston highlighted initiatives such as the possible creation of a land bank to address the housing affordability crisis and improvements in climate mitigation strategies, including the Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy Financing Program (CPACE), designed to help companies reduce their environmental footprint.

The meeting and subsequent public comments highlighted ongoing efforts to improve safety and quality of life in Charlottesville.
