UPDATE: Sumter Sheriff confirms death of child in county shooting; Coroner announces names

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis confirmed that the child struck by gunfire Monday has died.

On behalf of Dennis, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Mark Bordeaux announced that the 9-year-old victim, who was shot after multiple shots were fired into a home early Monday, died Wednesday morning.

Gregory Robinson Jr., 9, of Sumter, died of a gunshot wound at Prisma Health Richland in Columbia, Sumter Coroner Robbie Baker said.

Next of kin have been notified and an autopsy is scheduled for next Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The Sheriff’s Office will release more information as it becomes available.
