The best spy series on television right now is a British series that not many have heard of. The Apple TV+ series Slow horses recently won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for its third season. The season finale of its fourth season is titled Haunted Street will stream starting today, October 9th. Here’s why you should find out about this smart and funny series with the main actors Gary Oldmanwhich has already been renewed for season 5.

A bunch of unlikely protagonists

Created by Will Smith, Slow horses based on Mick HerronSlough House book series. These spies are not your average glamorous professionals. They are all failed MI-5 agents who were demoted in the service and sent to Slough House, where they are disparagingly referred to as Slow Horses by the so-called “real” agents. The head of Slough House is Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who is dirty and disgusting only in appearance. But Lamb is also the toughest agent in MI-5; He may be dealing with a bunch of out-of-shape, unsuccessful agents, but his instincts are always on the right track.

One of Lamb’s agents is River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), whose grandfather David (Jonathan) is a retired high-ranking MI5 officer. River is impulsive, emotional and often gets into difficult situations. The rest of the crew at Slough House are also outsiders. There are the capable office manager Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), the technology expert and hacker Roddy (Christopher Chung) and Louisa (Rosalind Eleazar), who have each other’s back when something goes very, very wrong.

Quality writing, directing and acting across all seasons

Since premiering on Apple TV+ on April 1, 2022 (a promising date), the series has released four seasons quite quickly and is already working on the next season. At a time when fans lament the long gaps between seasons on streaming services, the creators have produced high-quality television with six-episode seasons four times in two years.

Each season has a beautiful uniformity. Writer and creator Will Smith, now an Emmy winner, leads the writers’ room each season and a director directs all episodes of that season. Combined with the outstanding acting, the story of each season will not disappoint. The series also has some big risks, because every season we lose characters that we have grown to love. This is not a walk in the park and there are risks to life when dealing with issues such as terrorism and internal sabotage. Every year the show gets stronger and stronger.

Season 4 and River’s personal connection

In the recently concluded season, Lowden’s River is unable to adequately care for his grandfather, who is losing his memory due to dementia. Both David and River also encounter a mysterious person from their past, which could have consequences leading up to season five. Lamb looks after his Slough House crew despite his harsh protests. The next season is based on Herron’s fifth book in the series. London Rules. It will be exciting to see what misadventures Lamb and Co. experience next.
