Suraya and her inseparable friend, the talented singer Sima, try to navigate the unstable political landscape of Afghanistan in the late 1970s. From university halls to intimate gatherings, their opposing visions of freedom collide and converge: Suraya, a wealthy advocate of communism blinded by its promise of equality, takes on a key role within the pro-Russian faction, while Sima, a modest, conservative Muslim, is skeptical political power games, seeks refuge in tradition and gets married. Despite their differences, their shared belief in protecting women’s rights still binds them together in their sisterhood.

This is the story of an Afghan filmmaker Roya Sadatis the new historical drama Sima’s song [+see also:

which will celebrate its world premiere in the “Asian Future” competition at the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival (October 28th to November 6th). The script was co-written by Sadat, Aziz Deildar And Roellof Jan Minneboo. Afghan-Canadian singer, actress and activist Mozhdah Jamalzadah plays the role of Suraya, while the Iranian thesp Niloufar Koukhani portrays Sima. The cast also includes Max Grosse, Nelofer Pazira And Leena Alam.

Sima’s song is produced by Frank Hoeve for the Dutch film Baldr Film, Alba Sotorra for Spain’s ALBA SOTORRA, Maeva Savinien for France’s Urban Factory, Stefano Centini for Taiwan’s Volos Films and Roya Sadat for Afghanistan’s Roya Film House. The German company Pluto Film is responsible for worldwide distribution.
