PORT HUENEME, Calif. – Information Systems Technician 2nd Class (IT2) Donovan Asberry performed CPR on a crash victim on the I-5 Freeway in Downey, potentially saving the man’s life. The incident occurred on August 19, 2024, when IT2 Asberry, on his way home from work, noticed a car colliding with the highway median. After IT2 Asberry stopped and noticed the driver was breathing abnormally, he, along with other concerned motorists, took immediate action to help.

IT2 Asberry, who recently became CPR certified, noticed the driver was exhibiting unusual breathing patterns. “It was a deep breath followed by pauses. “I had never seen anything like that, not even in the movies,” recalls IT2 Asberry. He and another passerby quickly worked together to break the car window, unlock the doors and get the driver to safety.

EMS arrived after IT2 performed chest compressions on Asberry for 30 minutes. According to paramedics on scene, the driver’s pulse was weak but present, and they credited IT2 Asberry’s quick thinking and persistence with helping to keep the man alive.

“I’m just glad I was there at the right time,” IT2 Asberry said of the ordeal. “It’s a reminder of the importance of being willing to help others when you can.”

The accident occurred in Downey, snarling traffic on the busy highway for hours while authorities cleared the scene. Witnesses described the incident as chaotic but were inspired by the efforts of civilians who intervened.
