Robert Saleh was fired as head coach of the New York Jets after a lackluster start to the season

The New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday after suffering a loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in London that left them with a weak 2-3 season record. The team’s defensive coordinator, Jeff Ulbrich, will take over in the interim until a permanent replacement is found. Saleh, who previously served briefly as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, was hired to lead the Jets in 2021 and compiled a 20-36 record during his tenure. His .357 winning percentage is the worst in Jets history for a head coach who has led the team in at least 40 games. It’s the first time team owner Woody Johnson has fired a coach in the middle of a season during his 25-year tenure. The firing came after Saleh, a Muslim and of Lebanese-American descent, attracted attention when he carried a Lebanese flag during Sunday’s game as the country faced a wave of airstrikes from Israel. Interestingly, he is the third NFL head coach to be fired immediately after a loss in London, having come up short at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
