WVU police expand vehicle fleet with two motorcycles | E-News

To increase security on campus, the West Virginia University Police Department is putting its officers on two wheels.

Two motorcycles were recently added to the UPD fleet, and more than half a dozen officers have either completed or are in the process of going through the certification process to operate the vehicles.

“We are always looking for ways to put our officers where they need to be to protect the university community,” said Superintendent Sherry St. Clair.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus.”

Officers will use the motorcycles to quickly reach various areas, including the Rail Trail, the Core Arboretum, high-traffic events such as Mountaineer Game Days, where they have been used, and more.

“Our officers appreciate the convenience of the motorcycles, which can go places traditional vehicles cannot,” St. Clair said.

“We prioritize community policing initiatives that allow our officers to meet people outside of traditional law enforcement, and these motorcycles will help with that by making our officers more visible on campus, at events and in the Morgantown area.”
