Karamo Njie says UDP’s ‘growing popularity’ should deter Barrow –

North Bank Region UDP spokesperson Karamo Njie said the Gambia’s main opposition party’s “remarkable” performance in three national elections following the 2021 presidential election was a clear sign of the party’s exponential growth in popularity, adding President Adama Barrow should be afraid of this trend.

President Barrow was declared the winner of the 2021 presidential election with more than 400,000 votes.

However, many of the candidates his party fielded in county, local government and parliamentary elections suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of UDP candidates barely six months after Mr Barrow’s declared victory.

“Those who say that the UDP can only mobilize masses but cannot win elections do not agree with the political development of the country. If Barrow is at all paying attention to what is happening politically in this country, he should be fearful and worried about his political future,” the UDP regional spokesman said in an interview with The Voice on Tuesday.

“Let’s just say that in the last general election Barrow got 400,000 votes and UDP got 200,000 votes. But think about it… It was less than a year after the presidential election when we humiliated them in the district elections, trounced them in the local elections and crushed them in the parliamentary elections. To say that the UDP has many people but never succeeds is the height of ignorance,” Njie said.

“Barrow is a product of the UDP and he was able to lead the coalition to victory. This is a source of pride and inspiration for the UDP. I therefore urge Gambians to turn their backs on President Barrow and the NPP so that they can live dignified lives, free from the shackles of avoidable poverty and deprivation,” he added.

The UDP’s NBR spokesman said Gambians should join forces and banish Mr Barrow from State House in 2026 to rescue their country from “the abyss of moral, economic, social and financial decadence into which the Barrow- government pushed it in.”

“Barrow has shown the world that he is not the man for the job. It is therefore incumbent on all Gambians to teach him a lesson in the election that government failure is no longer fashionable for Gambians,” Njie stressed.

Meanwhile, UDP leader and general secretary lawyer AN M Ousainou Darboe received a hero’s welcome upon his return from the US on Monday.
