A man was arrested Tuesday in downtown Redding after he allegedly stabbed three men and killed a woman at a treatment center on Pine Street.

Redding police said they arrested 31-year-old Christopher Jordan Witcher after they found him hiding in a ditch not far from where the stabbing occurred.

Witcher had been staying at the Market Street Manor Motel for two weeks, where he was participating in a residential treatment program, police said. The motel also serves as temporary housing, police said.

Witcher moved to Redding earlier this year from Colorado, where he was serving a prison sentence for a stabbing-related incident, police said. He previously lived in Redding, police said.

Witcher and others were at a morning meeting shortly before 10 a.m. when the man suddenly attacked two residents and two employees with a large butcher knife without any apparent provocation, police said.

Witcher came to Redding in early 2024 after being released from prison in Colorado for a previous stabbing. He previously lived in the Redding area.

After the stabbing, Witcher fled the area before police arrived. When officers arrived at the motel, they found three men and a woman with stab wounds, police said. Three of the four victims were taken to a Redding hospital.

One woman died of her injuries in the hospital, police said. One of the men suffered serious injuries to his face, while a second man suffered “severe stab wounds to his upper body,” police said. Both underwent emergency surgery in hospital.

A third man suffered injuries that did not require hospitalization, police said. Tuesday’s incident was the second violent attack in Redding in four days.

Nearby schools were placed on lockdown while officers searched for Witcher, police said.

Christine Haggard is the program manager for Abundant Life Academy, which operates a program at Market Street Manor. She said the three victims and the man arrested in the stabbing were residents of the motel.

She said the stabbings occurred in a building adjacent to the east side of the motel. Haggard said they use the building as a classroom.

Abundant Life Academy is a faith-based nonprofit organization that uses referrals from other local nonprofit organizations to help homeless individuals in need of a sober living program.

Haggard said they were preparing to start the academy’s Future Story class when she heard screaming and didn’t know what had happened.

“It’s a little overwhelming. God is with us. He is with our people. That’s where I’m putting my energy right now,” Haggard said.

Last month, the Redding City Council approved a $1.2 million loan to help the owner of Market Street Manor convert the building into a transitional housing complex to help formerly homeless people.

Police said they plan to file murder charges for the death of the one woman and attempted murder charges for alleged knife attacks on the three men.

Tuesday’s stabbings came days after a deadly shooting in South Redding.

On October 4, two men were killed and three others were injured in a shooting near the Westwood Village shopping center.

On October 6, police in Sparks, Nevada, arrested 18-year-old Trevor Evanoff for his alleged role in the Friday morning shooting in South Redding. Evanoff is being held without bail in the Washoe County Jail on a murder charge.
