Detroit police fatally shoot a man who they say fired a gun at them

Detroit police fatally shot a man in his 30s while on patrol on the city’s east side Tuesday night after officers said he shot at them as they approached him, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at 7:10 p.m. by officers from the city’s 5th District near Chandler Park and Canyon, Deputy Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said at a late-night news conference. He said small children were playing soccer in the area where the victim was observed by officers.

Officers were “under surveillance of an individual they knew from a previous drug deal,” Fitzgerald said. They entered his name into a police database and learned he had violated his probation, he said.

Officers approached the man, who was in his late 30s, when he “pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the officer,” Fitzgerald said. An officer returned fire, fatally striking the victim, he said. The officer believed he had been struck and was taken to a hospital where no injuries were reported.

Fitzgerald said a “punch mark” was found in the lower part of the patrol car’s passenger door, “assuming that is why the officer believed he had been shot.” A gun was recovered, he said.

Fitzgerald declined to tell law enforcement the victim’s background, saying, “He has a long criminal history.”

“It’s just too much to list right now,” he said. “We are very fortunate that some of these young children were not injured in a shooting.”

When asked about parents who were concerned that the shooting happened near children playing, Fitzgerald encouraged them to “continue to come out with their children and continue to practice.”

“I’m sure it’s going to be a long season for them,” he said. “The officers are out here for this exact reason, they are out here trying to keep everyone safe. They know a routine patrol, they happened to notice this guy. You know him from previous encounters… You tried to make an encounter on him, and here we are.
